Поиск в каталоге для поиска файлов с определенными расширениями файлов

Каков наилучший способ поиска по каталогу с помощью php и выяснить, есть ли в каталоге файлы, заканчивающиеся указанным расширением файла, например, mp3 или pdf? Мне интересно, могу ли я сделать это с помощью оператора if.
