Когда вы ищете a.xpath('//ASIN/text()'), вы снова ищете полное дерево документов. Цитируя XML Path language specification:

//para выбирает все Para потомков корня документа и, таким образом, выбирает все элементы PARA в том же документе в качестве узла контекста

Так что вы делаете это итерация сопоставленные узлы Item и сказать «Дайте мне все узлы ASIN в этом документе, пожалуйста». Контекст для этого (узел Item) игнорируется.

Вместо этого вы должны непосредственно выбрать дочерний узел ASIN. Сохраняя вашу первоначальную реализацию это может выглядеть следующим образом:
