Но они всегда возвращаются пустыми, когда я рядом с пространствами имен узлов - Я могу вытащить данные из узлов вплоть до '/Navigator/NavigatorNodes/NavigatorNode', но затем не повезло.

Вы объявляете DEFAULT 'http://www.w3.org/21/XMLSchema-instance', но ваша строка XML даже не имеет пространства имен по умолчанию.

Попробуйте

@Davin: Когда в элементе верхнего уровня есть декларация 'xmlns =" ... "'. Обычные пространства имен получают назначенный префикс, например 'xmlns: prefix =" namespace-uri "', пространство имен по умолчанию - нет. – Tomalak
